Hi Marg,
My ancestors lived in the area of N. Victoria Co. which eventually became Haliburton Co. My grandfather, James Henry Steele was b. 2/26/1876 in Anson Twp. On the Vital Statistics Index is has Lutterworth Twp. and is Reg.#030350. His parents, Samuel David Steele & Susan Elizabeth Smith were m. Nov. 29, 1875, Reg.#210-735. Samuel d. Aug. 1885 in Anson Twp., Reg.# 016630. Susan went to live with her older brother, George Smith, and in 1887 remarried and moved to Michigan. Now, backing up...
George Steel(e) and his wife, Margret, came to Ontario, from Quebec, somewhere between 1863 & 1866 from the birth places of their children. They came from Ireland to Quebec. I am still trying to locate where they were living in Quebec. I don't know the ports of entry used in Quebec in the early 1850's.
As to Margret's maiden name being Brown...I got that from them using it as a middle name for their last child. It may not be correct although I don't know why else someone would use it as such.
Through correspondence with another Steele that followed more or less the same path (Ireland>Quebec>Ontario>Michigan), she seems to think they may have come from the northern part of Ireland maybe around Antrim??, but coming originally from Scotland around the Ayrshire area. As yet this is only speculation. Do your Steele's also come from Ireland through Quebec and on over to Ontario?
