In the mid 1840's my gg-grandfather, Robert Hughes of County Wicklow emigrated w/ his wife & children. They were some of MANY HUGHES' who wound up on ships bound for the St Lawrence. A landowner in Co. Wicklow sent them off to labor on the Quebec-St. Andrews RR. As in the case of your family, many on these ships died of typhus. In fact there was a quarantine Island called "little Hardwood Island" where many Hughes' perished.
My folks settled in various parts of New Brunswick, CANADA..there is even a town called WICKLOW there. My grandmother, Theresa Hughes emigrated to NY City in 1913 for a chance to go to nursing school.
Perhaps we have some Hughes' in common. Presently i am having a search done in Co. Wicklow for documentary evidence of the family there.
