Dear Sandra , Liz, miss cherry and trailblazerrr ,
( i cant remember all first names from memory)
below are some prominent coopers in early so car
and any or all may be tied to the fishing crew tribe
as hugh -father of capt robert at fishing creek -supposedly
came over with 3 other brothers from ireland ...
and so below are some important connections
that i wish to understand as my family i was told
by pat hash director of so car hist society on meeting street in charleston was from
rev robert cooper ...
but im not so sure and i am missing a key link ... or 2 or 3
and so in tryin for years to decipher that link/ those links
i have run across these prominent cooper names , many tie ins very interesting e.g. perhaps to edward rutledge a signer of decl of indep ...
so lets see if any of you have answers ... for us all
(this note seems long winded buT IT HAS MANY links
to prominent persons of their day that most would want to be aware of ...)
Jane Hamilton mar Capt Robert Cooper
son of Hugh Cooper (from Ireland circa?
1735 with 3 other brothers and sisters ??)
what relations to these following people
Gov James Hamilton of So Car
is Jane Hamilton above related
sister or daughter ???
Ties to John Couper (spelled with "ou", scot spelling) of St Simons Island, Ga
who was in business with Governor James
Hamilton of So Car and together they owned
about 15 working plantations , etc.
(this john couper (likely scot spelling of the name but many scots in northeast ireland too) had at his plantation an unusually large library of 20,000 books !!!! and was heavily into agriculture developing
new plants ,etc and had many prominent persons of his day visit his plantation... and also noteworthy is that
the keel fo the early US battleship the US Const was taken from a LIVE OAK on his plantation... this John Couper
supposedly came over later than most of the other prominent Coopers mention in this note coming over about 1790 and
marrying Rebecca Maxwell dau of the wealthiest person nearby to st simons island ga ...
how and why he is so heavily in business with gov James Hamilton of so car later i dont know ...
all the above mentioned plantations were sold ??? after civil war ???
to a trust that was called the "dodge family trust" and usued esp for lumbering
operations and pine from these plantations used in the huge bldg expansion of the nyc area ... this john couper has sons
John Couper and major James Hamilton Couper (later of atlanta)
and daughter ??? sarah / susan ???
relations of John Couper to Capt Robert
Cooper (or Capt's Roberts father hugh
and /or his 3 other cooper brothers ??)
relationship of these four Irish brothers
(Hugh and his brothers) to the wife of
Dr John Moultrie who was an ___ Cooper...
and Dr John Moultrie and his ___ Cooper wife
were parents of 4 very prominent Moultries sons including Gen William Moutrie of Rev War
relationship of _________ Cooper who
married ? Thomas Rutledge , father of
???? Edward Rutledge signer of Decl of
Indep from So Car ...
in fact relationships of all early (1680-1750)
Coopers in So Car to each other
IF ANY ...
including Joseph/John Cooper to Goose Creek
area near charleston in 1680-1690 from
it appears Ireland , county Wexford...
later Dr Thomas Cooper (d 1728) brother of Rev robert Cooper
of charleston who mar (1750/ 1760)
Anne Peronneau (about wealthliest family in
So Car ) and pastor of main church in charleston,
made prayer for king before rev war and
congregation grumbled about it
so he went back to england but highly unusually , was allowed to keep 35,000 lbs (they were normallly then confiscating property of royalists, unclear if he was
or prayed for the king out of habit)
(huge equiv to several hundreds of millions
of dollars today) fortune of his wife Ann
Dr Thomas Cooper above mar dau / niece of gov Wright of so car ...early governor ? 1720's ?
merchant John Cooper of Charleston always
referred to as Mr Cooper in biz with
William Glenn and buying ships , schooners
with Thomas Middleton... (later os descendent of his
William Glenn owning 10,000 acres at / near Glenn, Ga in Heard Co, Ga and this first homeplace of Wm M Cooper
in Heard Co (his first wife bur there ),
my ancestor who later lived
1-2 miles west of Waresville, Ga
and then moved later to Lamar, near Woodland
, Ala (Randolph Co, Ala)
Thomas Cooper, planter near charleston
perhaps son , grandson of that first
John/Joseph Cooper above at goose creek ...
major (rev war later colonel) Samuel Cooper
col John Cooper mar ____ (Eliz?) de Gignilliat
(so car hugenot fmaily ) both dying later
in 1830?'s near Aiken , So Car ...
de Gignilliat family perhaps related to Gen Francis Marion of Rev War
who mar ??? Hester ??? de Gignilliat perhaps a 2nd wife OR
? aunt of wife of Richard Cooper (who lived in So Car and later
had a plantation at / near Darien , Ga and on whihc are burrtied
Many de Gignilliats (""his wifes's neices/ nephews) (later this
plantation a "Bachelor" plantation but began as Cooper plantation)
(also note that this De Gignilliat family of Hugenots appears intermarried
??? with Peronneau family mentioned in this note...and this Richard Cooper's
plantation was I believe a RICE plantation as were many of Peronneau family's
plantations, so perhaps Richard related to / son of Rev Robert Cooper of
charleston, then england and Anne Peroneau Rev Robert Cooper's wife...)
and any tie ins to Lord Anthony Ashely Cooper fmaily of any
So Car Coopers as it is long rumored that he had family in So Car
sometimes claimed to be bastard children etc ...
Lord Cooper -one of 7 proprietors of Carolinas given ALL the land
of the Carolinas (north and south)- and they parceled out the land
to any and all but kept each for themselves a very large county
sized piece ... and unclear what happened to Lord Cooper's land -
as he was leader of the "Cabal" the small group that RAN ENGLAND
in the 1670's and 1680's until he had a falling out and was briefly
imprisoned in the Tower of London and then allowed to leave England
and left with a very huge fortune to go to Netherlands where he died
in only a couple of years ... his family was later rehabilitated and is
still today very prominent in England as Lord Cooper of Shaftsbury...
he at this early time was heavily into acquiring as much money as
possible (and e.g. had parties with 40 servants in livery) and into all
the affairs of all the colonies from Mass to Carolinas...
And in Boston was a Capt Thomas Cooper *mentioned for these facts
*died at sea 1705/6
he was the largest taxpayer in Boston and mar Mehitable Minot
neice of Dep Gov Wm Staunton and his son Thomas Cooper* came
born after his dad died in 1706
to Charleston and is supposed to have mar an Eliz de Haven and
MUST have died fairly young ???? (unclear) as an Eliz Cooper
is marrying in 1740's Rev William Guy pastor of the same main
church in charleston that later Rev Robert Cooper is pastor of
and she married (third time???) later a Brasdon....
(note it appears that this Capt Thomas Cooper of Boston and his
brother Capt Wm Cooper of England / ?London brought many
Hugenot families over to USA ... many ending up in So Car)
(ALSO this Capt Thomas Cooper of Boston owned houses he rented
INCLUDING renting to Josiah Franklin FATHER OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
who later moved to Philadelphia ... AND another son of Capt Thomas Cooper
of Boston was Rev William Cooper who was pastor of the Brattle Street Church
(co founded by his dad Capt Thomas Cooper) and mar a dau of Ch Justice
Samuel Sewell of Mass Sup Ct and later this Rev Wm Cooper REFUSED
an offer to be president of Harvard ... (and later his son Samuel also refused
such an offer ---both appear to be motivated (perhaps by disinterest from
being well to do ) OR the possible connection to John Harvard (he did not
found Harvard, except this way he left 1/2 his estate about 2,000 lbs in early
days ??? 1650's to Harvard (then equiv to ?50-100 million dollars) which was the foundation of building up Harvard ...
and so the college was named after him for that ... and he appears to have
Married a grandau of William Shakespear (unproven connnection i have
come across ) and similarly the Cooper family appears to have a Shakespear
connection in that Capt Thomas Cooper of Boston's dad, granddad married
a Quincy and a Quincy did marry Wm Shakespears dau (he had two daus)
so that PERHAPS this Rev William Cooper turned that presidency of Harvard
down thinking it wasnt right with his connection to John Harvard to take that
position....
(all unproven ??? perhaps speculation, but those connections appear to exist
with connections given in early genealogy book "Gleanings in England" volumes
I & II..."
what this note has attempted to do is this
there are some VERY important ties of early Coopers that are unknown ... and need to be worked out and they clearly MIGHT be related to many later cooper families as for example the coopers of fishing creek ...
one last prominent ? Thomas ? Cooper was pres of college in so car
coming to (1820's ?) so car from Pennyslvania where he was a prof
of chemistry and he became a promimnent OUTSPOKEN leader of SUCCESSION in the PRE civil war era ( i think he died about
1835?? from memory unclear) he was a good friend of a De Leon editor of one of the main newspapers (in Columbia ?)
Later a Col Leon Cooper in Civil War in Georgia ...
and wonder if ties to this college president Cooper and his friend de Leon ???? esp as my name is Leon Earl Cooper, Jr.

Ga
the Descendants of Thomas Cooper of
Springfield < Mass who came to usa 1635 to
New Haven , Ct area moved up for only 1-2
years to Hartford, Ct area and then built
the First Church in Springfield , Mass
about moving that about 1640 ... he had
a very large family and mentioned esp
sons Thomas and Timothy who came to found
e.g. enfield, Ct ... and
esp as this first Thomas Cooper was killed
1675 by Indians in K Philliops War ...
his wife was Sarah Sly sister of ROBERT
Sly of Maryland and Robert Sly's wife
Susannah (some argue Robert sly's wife
was a Cooper, either way) left two prominent
plantations in St Mary's co, Maryland to
her nephews Thomas and Timothy Cooper
... later this family married into the
Anthony family in Va moving over to nearby
Va (about 3-4 generations later Thomas1,Thomas2,Thomas3,Thomas4 marrying
Susan Anthony ... then this family moves
down to ??? Green Co, Ga (with several of the children accompanying them) and one of its descendants Mark Anthony Cooper is prominent businessman and later Congressman from Ga
