My great grandmother was named Margaret Hickey and was also born circa 1850. I believe she came to the USA, probably to New Jersey, in the 1860's with her sister Annie.
In 1870 she married Robert A. Brown, a woolen manufacturer, who's family ran mills in Philadelphia and New York. Between 1871 and 1880 she had six daughters- five survived. They were Mary (known as Molly), Sarah (known as Sadie), Annie (known as Nannie) twins Margaret (died shortly after birth) and Madeleine (who was my grandmother) and Cecelia. Her husband died in 1880, five months after her last child was born. The family was living in Philadelphia at the time (they had previously lived in New York and New Jersey)
Her husband's brother James Brown, apparently provided for the family very well afterwards.
If you think there is a possibility that our Margaret Hickey gGrandmothers are the same, please let me know!
Happy New Year!
