Hi Steve:
My great-grandmother's maiden name was Nealis. She came from County Mayo to the U.S. in about 1858.Somehow she got to St. Paul, Minnesota, and later met and married Michael Rowan. The Rowans were from Foxford, Co. Mayo, Ireland and came to the U.S. in Feb., 1847.
There were also Nealis clans in a town Called Bonniconlon, also in Mayo and not far from Foxford.
I have seen Nealis spelled Nellis, Nelis, Neilus, and on and on.On her wedding certificate my great-grandmother's name was spelled Sarah Nellis. So ---
The other Nealis clan that came from Bonniconlon also went to Minnesota.A Mary Nealis married a Peter Dougherty and had a big family in and around so. St. Paul.Other Nealis sisters immigrated to Minn., too. They had a brother, John Nealis, who came over from Ireland, and became a priest while in Minn.I have a hunch, and it is only a hunch, that my Sarah Nealis may be a cousin to this family, as they both ended up in St. Paul at the same time.
Please feel free to ask more questions.I love it when I hear from someone from the Nealis clan -- no matter where.Interesting about Leeds. For all I know my Nealis folks may have gone to England first, too.Just don't know.
