Joseph,
Your post on family in the Pittston, Pa./County Mayo, Ireland nexus caught my eye. I have a Loftus connection. My great uncle, William Higgins, married a Mary Loftus.
I, too, have been told that the families came from County Mayo, but have no town or parish to work from. The Luzerne County, Pa. site is a good one and has really nice people on it.
I went to Pittston, and did some reading in the Pittston Library. Some articles in the newspaper seemed to indicate that Ballyna and Ballyglas might be points of origin.
My families that I am researching are Mangan and Delaney: James Mangan and Catherine Delaney came to the Plains, and Port Griffin, Pa. area. James fought in the Civil war...there was also a John, a Michael and a Patrick from the area that received Civil War Pensions. I have not been able to establish a family tie as yet. Catherine Delaney, her siblings and her mother and father, Martin and Mary Delaney lived in the Plains area. I assume that they came over at the same time. My great grandfather, Martin Joseph Mangan was born in Pa. around 1860-64. So, James Mangan and the Delaney family must have immigrated prior to 1860.
Other family connections are Kearney, Higgins, Clarke, Divers/Devers, Ferguson, Loftus, Howley, Nalty, McGoldrick, Noone. Perhaps you have had some luck and found out where your people were from in Cty. Mayo, since you posted in 2003.
