There are no census available for Mayo until 1901, however there is a "next best document", The Griffith Valuation of Mayo which was accomplished in 1856. Unlike a census which lists all family members, Griffith's lists only the head of the family or "head of household".
In the entire County Mayo there were only four Maher's listed, of which two John and Patrick were residents of Westport.
Maher Patrick Cahernamart, Tn of Westport: Mill Street, Parish of Oughaval
Maher John Cloonmonad, Westport Quay Oughaval Mayo.
It is possible that John and Patrick are related,
I suggest, you obtain through your local Morman Family Research Center a microfiech copy of the follow-on GV documents which were periodically updated when the previous head of household either died or moved. The updated document will provide the name of the new head and year the individual assumed responsibility for the property. This review will verify when your Maher left Mayo for the US.
You can also write to the rectory of St Mary'sin Westport for possible baptism and marriage records.
Please advise if I can be of any further help.
