INGRAM, County Louth to California via West Indies, New York

Can anyone shine some light on the fact that while William Ingram's obituary says he was born about 1828 in Carlingford, Louth Co., Ireland, his children consistently report in the US census that he was from the West Indies, Puerto Rico, etc.?

Does anyone have knowledge of the migrations from Louth County to New York via the West Indies in the 1840-1850's?
