I am trying to find my Grandfathers family. My information is very sketchy as my Grandfather Patrick Roche left Ireland at the age of 14 on a cattle boat bound for Stirling Scotland & joined the British Army as a Band Boy. He never made contact with his family again. Whilst he was alive a letter came from a Christopher Roche who was a nephew at a chemical works in Drogheda, which mentioned a ball & knife. He was very angry at the time and wrote back saying he never wanted any contact with the family again. There must have been some big problem when he was a boy.

He also maintained that he had no birth certificate and could not get a copy because the Dublin Records were all destroyed in 1921. Throughout his life he used the name John Patrick Roche. However my aunt (his daughter) wrote to the local register in Droghedea in 1949 and obtained a copy. Details below

Births Register District- St Peters West Ward
Superintendent Registrars District- Drogheda
County- Louth
Record number- 155
Date and place of birth- 1878 March 14 Mell
Name- Patrick
Sex- Male
Name surname and dwelling place of father- Thomas Roche Mell
Maiden surname of mother- Mary Roche formerly Carolan
Profession of father- Laborer
Signature qualification and residence if Father- Thomas Roche (he used a
X as his mark) Father Mell
When registered- 25 March 1878
Registrar- Thomas Dunne

My aunt wrote to Drogheda when her father died and received a reply from the Chemical works to say that they did have an elderly pensioner Christopher Roche but he had since died. This leads me to believe that Christopher Roche was the child of my Grandfathers brother. Patrick Roche had two children my Father Maurice Patrick St Eloi Roche he has since died and had no knowledge of my grandfathers roots other that what I have mentioned.
Patrica Roche (Searl) who is now coming up to her 80's
