Thompson's of Longford

Hurray, after 13 years of searching I have found out my ancestors came from Parish Ardagh County Longford Ireland. I have seen some other postings from this and other locations in Longford and from what I have researched I have seen that this was probably the most populous County of what is now the Republic of Ireland(I am not including Northern Ireland)for Thompson's.
Now my question is- Has anyone who has Thompson ancestors from this area gone back farther than the mid 1800's and found when and where these Thompsons had originally come from? Did these Thompsons come from England or Scotland into the Northernmost counties and work there way into Longford? And when would you think this would have been 1300's 1500's 1600's? I am very curious how far people have gone back and how far it is possible to go back. Looking foward to hearing from anyone.
