I use the Irish Family History Foundation's database. It contains 11,500,000 surviving rcds for abt 60% of Irish counties. Co. Longford is in the database. ALL Irish rcds B4 1840 are sparse.

There are abt 5,800 B rcds for the Degnan surname in the database. 395 of these are in Co. Longford. However, none with the Patrick forename are in 1847. The closest are in 1842, and 1855. Only 3 of 18 RC parishes were not keeping rcds by 1847.

Assuming a marriage date of the parents in 1842 +/- 4 yrs, I found 0 rcds. The only Patrick Degnan M before your ancestor's birth date was in 1816.

It appears that the birth and marriage events for your ancestors wasn't rcd'd, the rcds were lost, or they haven't been digitized. The 1st possibility is the most likely.

Sorry I can't give better news.
