Your naming pattern follows the Irish Naming Tradition; 1st sons were named after the fathers father.

For Matthew Fitzgerald M 1855 +/- 4 yrs, I found 1 M rcd in 1856 Limerick in St. Patrick's parish church. However, I didn't find a matching M rcd for Ellen O'Brien in the same yr, same county, same parish. Thus, this is not a match. It is unusual, but not unheard of, for a marriage rcd to exist for one party, but not the other. Sometimes this is worth exploring.

There is a B rcd for a John Fitzgerald with a father named Mat(thew) B 1857 in Co. Clare. This fits your time line, but it could also be due to random chance.

Sorry I can't be more definitive. Hope this helps.
