Hello Cheryl,

According to indexes uncovered at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website, there were 6 William McGowans baptized in County Leitrim from 1840 to 1849. Only one of these indexes is for a William McGowan baptized in 1845.

See the indexes below:

Church Baptism       MacGowan William 1840       Co. Leitrim
Church Baptism       Magowan William 1844       Co. Leitrim
Church Baptism       MacGowan William 1844       Co. Leitrim
Church Baptism       MacGowan William 1845       Co. Leitrim
Church Baptism       MacGowan William 1846       Co. Leitrim
Church Baptism       MacGowan William 1849       Co. Leitrim
____

The William McGowan Baptized in 1845 may be your ancestor.

The IFHF website can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before you begin searching for ancestors at the IFHF website you first need to establish an account. Indexes are free to search, but to download a birth, baptism, marriage, or death transcription costs 5.00 Euros each, payable by credit card. Once the credit card payment is received a transcription of the record you are interested in, will be sent to your computer.

An advanced search at the IFHF website shows that William McGowanís baptism was recorded in the Kinlough Catholic Church. Kinlough was chosen from the Parish/District drop-down box at the IFHF search engine. The place of the baptism and the names of the parents of a child who was born or baptized, are not automatically provided for the researcher at this site.

See the advanced baptism index for William below:

As noted earlier the IFHF search engine doesnít provide the names of the parents when you find the birth or baptism index for an ancestor. You either have to know the names of the parents, or guess as to what their names were, or purchase the transcription to find out their names.

I made several guesses as to the name of Williamís father. The search engine accepted the first name of Owen:

I didnít uncover the first name of his mother and didnít try to guess what her maiden name might have been.
If you order the baptism transcription youíll learn who his mother was.

Did William McGowan name any of his sons Owen?

Cheryl, the above index for William McGowan isnít proof that this William McGowan is your ancestor. What youíll need to do is see if you can find the names of Williamís parents recorded in documents in the United States, and then compare those names with the names found in the Kinlough baptism transcription. One such document that may provide the names of his parents would be his death certificate. His place of birth may also be listed in his death certificate. If Williamís parents arenít listed in his death certificate, see if they are named in his marriage record.

If his parents and place of birth in Leitrim arenít mentioned in his death certificate, or his parents arenít named in his marriage record, your search will become more challenging. What you can do next is see if William McGowan had any brothers and sisters that immigrated to the U.S., and then, if possible, find their death certificates, as their death certificates may tell you who the parents were and where in Leitrim they were born.

Also look for the obituaries for William and the obits for any siblings he may have had, as any one of these may possibly give the names of the parents and the town or parish of birth for your McGowans in County Leitrim.

Best Wishes Cheryl,

Dave Boylan
