McNiff Family Leitrim County Early 1800's

I am researching my McNiff family ancestors.I have found 10 or 12 spellings for McNiff. Is that a normal part of researching Irish names?

I'm looking for information about a Peter McNiff and wife Mary Burke (b. about 1820). From Ireland, perhaps Leitrim County, they came to the U S around 1845. They has 3 children in Massachusets, all three were in California by 1870, perhaps their Father Peter, was as well. The children were John Henry McNiff, Catharine McNeeve, and Annie Eloise McNeeve.

I have a note about a John McNiff (b.about 1800) and Ann McKeon from Leitrim who married. They had two sons, Peter (b.1828) and Thomas (b.1822). Sons are said to have emigrated about 1850.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
