Arthur Reilly, of Drumreilly, in Griffiths Evaluation 1856

I'm trying to find out anything at all about my ggg grandfather Arthur Reilly. He is listed in the Griffiths Evaluation as living in the Townland of Drumconlevan, Drumreilly, Leitrim. He was married to Sarah Jane Mitchell, no date. They had 7 children:
Francis - 1844
Archibald - 1845-6
Elizabeth - 1848
George - 1857
Alexander - 1858 (my gg grandfather)
Jane - 1865
William Arthur - 1868

The children all emigrated to Canada, some in 1870, some in 1880, and the rest along with the mother in 1883. Arthur, the father, was said to have been shot by Catholics and after that event Sarah Jane brought the three remaining children with her to Canada to join her other children.

Is there a way I can research in Ireland before 1856? And if anyone has a family which would fit any of these children please let me know!

Thank you for your help.
