Dear College Farm (and it would be nice to address you as a person by name),

Thanks for your messages. I've copied the Irish censuses now that they're on-line, and yes, these were a big help. I found James WILSON as a child in the household of Jacob and Elizabeth Wilson.

A Neale-Wilson descendant has corresponded with me since my posts, and confirmed that James WILSON was the son of Jacob WILSON and Elizabeth Kavanagh who married in 1884. Jacob Wilson died in 1920 and apparently (from what I found in ship passenger lists) his widow Elizabeth and a number of their children emigrated to the United States a few years later.

Jacob and Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth Jane Wilson remained in Ireland where she had married James NEALE in 1912. So she and James were the Irish relatives referred to in the Wilson family's New York passenger records.

Which Neale was your grandparent? In 1911, the NEALE family counted in the census at Ballycook (Kinneagh, Co. Carlow), with son James who was to marry Elizabeth Jane Wilson the next year, included:

Samuel Neale - 67 - Head of Family - Church of Ireland - born Co. Wicklow - Farmer - Read and write - Married
Lucy Neale - 65       - Wife - Church of Ireland - born Co. Kildare       - Read and write - married 39 years - 5 children, 5 living
James Neale - 32 - Son - born Co. Wicklow - Farmers Son       Single
Arthur A. Neale - 27 - Son - born Co. Carlow - Farmers Son - Single
Alfred S. Neale - 22 - Son - born Co. Carlow - Farmers Son - Single

Regards,
Annie
