Simon,
Asked my 'contacts' but none heard of Bartle Whelan.
As far as they can remember there was a Sid Whelan who lived on the Heath and had a Taxi service, (not sure how long ago) but they think his father's name was Bartholomew, so perhaps that's where it came from. There is Whelan taxi in Portlaoise and they think he may be a releation of some sort, but not sure.
