My research indicates that my g'g'grandfather, Richard Reddigan, was born in Co. Kilkenny, likely in the 1790s. He came to Newfoundland, Canada in the early 1800s, and died here in 1872. My problem is that I have hit a brickwall in trying to nail down a specific location (parish, town, townland, etc.)as his place of origin in Co. Kilkenny.
However I recently located a substantial list of surnames which are very likely variations of my family surname - Reddigan. The list of surnames were extracted from various Co. Kilkenny church and civil records. It shows surnames recorded as Reidigan, Reedigan, Readigan, Rat(t)igan, Rhatigan, Rathigan, Rhatagan, Radigan, Red(d)igan, Redegan, Redican, Ridigan. Although I haven't purchased all the individual records yet, several that I have received indicate the presence of this family (or group of families) concentrated in southern Kilkenny, particularly in the Roman Catholic parishes of Kilmacow, Slieverue, and Mullinavat.
A visit to Ireland in 1989 located the final resting place, in Mullinavat cemetery, of a family known there locally as Reidigan/Reedigan/Readigan. However, strangely on their headstone, their surname is recorded as Rearden, (an attempt at anglicization?) further evidence to the confusion with agreeing upon a consistent spelling for this surname. The last of this family died in 1925. The 1901 Census of Ireland also show Micheal & Johanna Redigan living in the townland of Owning (RC parish of Templeorum?). Although married, it appears that the couple were childless.
I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who recognizes any of these surname variations that still exist, or may have existed, in Co. Kilkenny.
