Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland lists several branches of the Barton family, all descended from Thomas Barton of Barton Hall in Lancashire, England. Thomas Barton was an officer in the Earl of Essex' army during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Ireland had been declared subject to the British rule 100 years earlier but the Irish were not happy about it (to put it mildly).
The years 1594-1603 were known as the O'Donnell/O'Neill Rising, a time of Irish rebellions. In essence, this forced the Queen to send armies over to quell the Irish uprisings, and Thomas Barton went with them in 1599. They were successful (I'm trying not to make judgments but I'm guessing the English had every advantage) and the Queen rewarded her top troops with huge tracts of Irish land.
The displaced Irish sometimes became poor tenant farmers on the lands they had once ruled. Regardless of the fairness of it, our Thomas Barton ancestor was given 1000 acres of beautiful land. And the story goes on.
