DOHERTYs who Emigrated to North Carolina
I have DOHERTY brick walls I have tried to break through
for at least 25 years. Knowing that Donegal had/has a large DOHERTY (17 spelling variations found so far) population, I am just searching for any hints.
All I have so far is that Anthony DOHERTY Sr was in Orange Co
North Carolina at least by 1784. His son, my g+grandfather, James, received a grant of land in Orange Co in 1790, where he died in 1815. Another son, Anthony Jr had fought in the service of George III, married into the Loyalist McCOOL family and moved to Canada.
The only information that those named above were born in
Ireland is the report in the 1880 census by Anthony III that
both his father, James, and grandfather, Anthony Sr, were
born there.
I have searched PRONI, any number of Irish sites, for many years. and had advice from many who are more knowledgeable
than I, and am no closer to an answer to their Irish roots
than I was decades ago. As many DOHERTYs in Ireland as there
are JONES in Wales.HELP.
