Thanks for the suggestions. The earliest record I've found for Robert is his freehold registration in 1761. In 1775, a Samuel Floyd registered - presumably his son. The registrations were part of the national archives online databases. I can see that the family remained in the area through the early 1900's. I suspect, but as yet, have been unable to prove, that the Robert Floyd who registered to vote in 1761 is a brother to my ancestor Richard Floyd who lived about 12 miles away in Ards Big. The proximity of their freeholdings and the fact that the name Samuel was frequently given to descendants of both men makes me think they were either brothers or cousins. The Ards line was Presbyterian and the Ballycallan line was Church of Ireland by the 1900's, so that points against them being related. Though of course the selection of church membership might have been determined by the female lines. Guess I was hoping that there might be living descendants who could make up for the lack of records.... it never hurts to dream!
