Dear Tim, I had the impression that Cleveland was a good place for finding Irish ancestors, although other than their marriage in Cleveland in 1867 I haven't found my KERINs anywhere in Ohio and they had 5 children born there all the way up until 1878! I have some historical information about where the different nationalities lived in Cleveland in the hopes of pinpointing some Enumeration Districts to look through in the 1870 census. I do not have the source close at hand, though, and will not for a couple weeks. If you'll be patient, I'll privately email you the info then and perhaps it will shake something loose for you.
One other idea which I haven't had a chance to pursue - my Jeremiah KERIN married Elizabeth McCABE who was born in Canada but whose father, at least, was born in Ireland. She came to the US from Canada when she was about 10. My thought is that perhaps Jeremiah also went through Canada first and then came over to Cleveland. Cleveland is on Lake Erie not far from Toronto. Many Irish went to Canada in the mid 1800s, I believe, because the passage was cheaper than coming directly to America. I have not found any "port of entry" documents, though, to give me any clues. (If only theories, suppositions and conjecture could qualify as "genealogy"!)
