My Pierce Nolan who immigrated to Cecil Co. MD in the mid 1600s named his landthere in MD "Fethard." This leads me to County Tipperary as a probable place that he lived in Ireland.County Carlow is the ancestral place of the Nolan clan, and it is quite close to Carlow, so I would say that our lines join eventually.
I donated my Noland book to the local library. This bookMIlesian Mountaineers by J. Lynn Noland just traced me to my immigrant. I descend from Pierce Noland who came into Cecil County MD.
An article from the book Irish Settlers in America concerning the settlers in New Munster which was in the Elk River area of Cecil Co., Maryland. The article concerns the O'Dwyer family who received a grant of land during the late years of the seventeenth cntury. It is stated on page 194 "since they named their dwelling plantations after Irish towns or cities it is assumed they were natives of these places." Among others mentioned is a Pierce Nowland, listed as the "Patentee" and his dwelling plantion is listed as "Fethard." (Could this be County Wexford?-Doris)
This immigrant Pierce:
Pierce Noland, b. Ireland; d. 1715 Stafford Co., Virginia
Katherine (?( b. Ireland; d. Cecil/Charles Co., Maryland.
From another source:
Most of my information concerns the descendants of Pierce Noland who came to Cecil Co., Maryland about 1688, probably from County Mayo. There were other Noland men in that area of Maryland who were probably brothers or some relation. (Where the County Mayo comes from, I do not know. I have also seen him born in Dublin! I don't know if they are confusing place of departure for birth, or if they are just going on family tradition. I haven't seen any facts from anyone on his birth. The "Fethard" sesms like the best clue of all to me.-Doris)
Another source:

More About PHILLIP NOWLAND and BRIDGET NELSON:

5. vi.WILLIAM NOLAND, b. Abt. 1658, Ireland; d. Aft. 1719, St Mary's Co., Maryland.
I am sorry that I can not be more specific. Even if he was born from Dublin or County Mayo, the generations before him had to come from County Carlow.
