Looking for the parents of Thomas McDowell

My great grandfather was Thomas McDowell. He was born Feb. of 1847. He arrived in America in 1880 in New York city. He then went to Wheeling, West Virginia, then settled in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania. An uncle remembers he came from Portadown. The census fits that as is says Northern Ireland. Another family member thinks his father's name was William and that he had 2 other brothers that came to the U.S. One may have been named Albert. That is all the information I have. I do not know if he was married and perhaps widowed in Ireland and nobody came with him when he cameover. Can someone direct me as to how to search in Ireland? I do not understand the terns for your geography, like townland. Is that just what we call town or city? I need all the help I can get. Thanks, Donna
