Your Rowell family is most probably Assyrian. I have friends whose grandfather came from the Assyrian section of Iran/Persian to Chicago during that same period. I am sure the names were changed upon arrival, as you have discovered. There was a genocide/pogroms during that period against Assyrians and Armenians since both were Christian.
