Yes, the British Military was involved during that time period. Since 1804, the British feared that the Russia would manipulate the reigning Iranian dynasty (Qajars) to attack the wealthiest British colony, India. So, after the first Russo-Persian War, Britain moved in and started to imperialize the Iranian Royal Court to the point that Iran was no longer ruled by their Shahs, but by the will of the British Monarch.

So, from 1804 to 1979, the British were highly active in Iran. Now, many British, American, French, etc. missionaries came to Iran and settled in places, such as Orumiyeh (Urumieh--also spelled Urmia). One famous person is Howard Conklin Baskerville, an American missionary who fought along side the Iranians during the Constitutional Revolution in 1908. Sadly, he was killed when helping 150 Iranian students during the Monarchist Siege of Tabriz.

But, the point is that your family, the Rowell's, were probably missionaries to Iran during the Qajar Era and left after the Constitutional Revolution of 1908.
