my mom is a khalatbari too and the great granddaughter of Sepah Salar! basically it started with Sepah Salar Khalatbari Tonekaboonee who was a very wealthy landowner in northern Iran, born in Tonekaboon which is near the Caspian sea. Back then the local "kings" or Khans ruled certain areas of Iran (like fifedoms) and he was the most powerful in Iran and ruled the northern part of Iran. He later became Commander in Chief of the Royal Persian army; however his power was a concern for the shah who saw him as someone who could overthrow him, since Sepah Salar was a true blue-blood, and a major concern for the religious leaders who saw Sepah Salar's frequent travels to France from where he returned with progressive ideas on democracy, a challenge to their power. You can guess what happens next of course. He is stripped of all powers. But the family name and legacy remains. You are from the most noble of Persian families, with true pedigree and lineage. I actually visited one of his rather small palaces in Tehran which is in "Bagh-e-Ferdows". It's a monstrous palace still with 40 ft carved ceilings and views of all of Tehran. I can send you a photo if you like of this palace.
