Asalam aleikum.

My name is Mazharullah Awan. I live in London, UK. My late father Azizullah Awan gave us an original shajra [family tree] which was handed to him by his late father who lived in India now Pakistan in District Sialkot and had farmland there as well as Sahiwal Dist Montgomery.

We are born in Africa as our father emigrated there after serving in the British Indian Army during the First World War. My nephew took our family tree to someone at the Islamic Centre of Regents Park Mosque. He was told that the names link us to Hazrat Ali [PBUH], the document is said to carry names of ancestors to about 1500 years and to have originated in Persia. The languages change as the document has 'evolved', it is written on parchment/paper and I will inshallah put it into a more versatile format at some point.

The Awans are spread all over the World. During a visit to Belgium I discovered that there exist two villages in Liege province called 'AWAN' and 'AWANS' It would be interesting to find out how these names came to be in Europe. Various encyclopedias including Britannica and Encarta mention a Kingdom of Persia called Awan, do check on this. We are very proud to be 'THE AWANS' and inshallah will keep in touch with those who are interested in the AWAN FAMILY.

Allah Hafiz

M Awan.
