Salaam alaykom! My name is Karen Parvin and this website has suggested that I post this correspondence to the Iran forum as well. We are looking for Parvins who would like to be DNA tested and perhaps have blood relatives living in America. Please read further... Merci! Khoda Hafeze bar shoma baad, Karen Parvin Name: Karen Parvin E-Mail: kkaren9992000@yahoo.com Subject: Re: Where does Parvin come from? Added on Date: 2/08/01 Message Number: 64 Body of Message: Salaam alaykom, Richard! I am very excited about DNA testing on Persian Parvins and do hereby volunteer to be a DNA donor, Insha'Allah. I encountered the Persian population and culture in the 1970's and was recently reintroduced, which has raised the question of how I got this Persian name again. Are you aware that "Parvin" is also a Persian female first name and its meaning is the constellation, the Pleadies (the Seven Sisters)? The male first name is Parviz. I recently met an Iranian woman at a local mall whose first name is "Parvin", if you recall --- my first living Persian example of our name. Unfortunately, I do not know any Persian Parvins personally, however I do regularly message with a Persian friend living in Iran and I could ask him if he knows any, if you wish. Do you have any contact with your niece? She could be a valuable resource. I also volunteer to help you with your contact emails since I do dabble in Farsi and can exchange pleasantries, if you also wish. Persian culture and food (yum!) has always seemed like "home" to me, so I am interested to find out if there is some genetic "cultural memory" at work here. I know I do experience something like this for Scottish culture -- aye, I've got bagpipes in me bluid -- my Black Irish co-worker and I can listen to Celtic music all day long, much to the chagrin of the others. I am Scottish (Clan Donald!))/Welsh on my mother's side. My particular clan is the result of migrated Irish who intermarried with the local Picts to produce Scots, who were conquered by and intermarried with the Vikings to produce the Donalds, ie MacDonalds, who ultimately rid Scotland of her Viking conquerors. We are the original Clan. That Parvins come from England is sitting none too well with my Highland ancestors, however if I get to have Persian ancestry, I'll be glad to stop the Donaldsons (English spelling!) from spitting on the ground! As for Black Irish, according to my co-worker, who is Irish both sides and hails from Pittsburgh, the way that dark-haired, olive-skinned Irish came about is through intermarriage with the Moors. Traditionally Irish are Celts who migrated from Europe and are fair-skinned and light and red(!)-haired. My friend could easily be taken for Italian and since Italians are the preferred culture for Irish to marry (if they do not marry another Irish, that is), he sports an alter-ego named Vinny (yaknowwhadImean?). It stands to reason since the entire UK area was conquered by the Moors that something of this nature is at work in the Parvins, making me love to eat Ghormeh Sabzee, as well as porridge. I have also recently reverted to Islam, which could further bear out the Moorish influences. Here is a FAX number for sending me the genealogy: 916-748-2352. It is my work FAX, so please identify that it is for me when you send it. They know me at work as "Karen Braaten" since that is legally my name, however I am in the process of changing to my maiden name (divorce). I am also considering taking Parvin as my first name for Muslim purposes, since not every revert comes complete with a Muslim name! You are truly the right person to have responded to me. So many pieces have fallen into place since my revertion, that I feel certain that the Persian DNA link will be established. All things happen for a reason. Once again, thank you for your time and valuable work on our genealogy. Are you and I of the same lineage? Khoda Hafeze bar shoma baad ( May Allah's protection be upon you), Karen
