Solved it! I got to thinking about Win 7's User Account Control (UAC) again...it caused me all sorts of problems when I first got the desktop. As on my desktop, I had set the laptop UAC at the lowest level (never notify)...I moved the slider up two notches (to Recommended), now all is well.

Why the lowest UAC setting on the desktop works with FTM (and doesn't on the laptop) is beyond my pay grade.
