Billy: Thank you so very much for your post. This really means a lot to me. I have copid your response and put the info in my genealogy book I am making. I put the picture of my paternal grandfather's grave marker on the page with your response.
Yes, I do believe Ellen (his second wife-whom I simply adored) told us grandkids that she was part Indian. I do not recall what tribe, I was very young. She had a little herb shop when she met my grandfather. She was a wonderful lady. You might be interested in some of the stories I have of some of her cures.
My maternal grandmother,born in Mobile and raised in Stockton, Ala. claimed to be 1/4 Cherokee. I recall my mother and grandmother talking about getting her "papers" after the farm house in Bay Minette burned to the ground.(wood stove!) We are talking mid 1940's here.
