Dot at end of name

When in a cemetery on Saturday I was perplexed when I saw that some wive's names imprinted on their gravestones had what looked to be a large dot or square at the end of the name.
One example,my husband's great great grandfather's stone reads:
Capt. Jedediah Davison
AET 70yrs 4m
He leaves a wife and (unreadable)children mourn his loss

Next grave over:

Anna Rood.( that's the "thing" although it looked somewhat square.)
Wife of Jedediah Davison
Died
May 1872
AET 72yrs 1 1m

Any ideas?
