There is an old heirloom in my family that is a chifferobe. My grandfather bought it for his parents when he was about 18, which would have been back in 1928 or 1929 (he was born August 10, 1910). It got passed around a lot and was last with a great aunt of mine who passed away. After she died it spent a lot of time in her unoccupied home until my aunt asked her descendants if she could have it and was granted permission to go get it. My mother and her boyfriend helped her pick it up yesterday (it is now after 12 a.m. where I am) and sadly it needs repairs. I remembered that one of the drawers when pulled out, on an outer side of the drawer (that was obscured when pushed in) had a man's face on it along with his name and some other writing. I was a child when I saw it last and could not remember the details. I wanted to know exactly what it said so I could try and figure out who this man was. Well, I didn't get to go with mom to pick it up, so my cousin took some pictures of the picture on the drawer at my request, with her digital camera and sent them to me. The drawing appears to be done with a pencil, pen, or charcoal, but it has been there for so long that we don't know how that would have lasted so long. There is a red like varnish over his hat and I think there used to be around the neck, but I can't see it around the neck anymore. It is still over the hat. Well, the man (head turned sideways) is wearing a hat or cap, has a beard, and a collar. There is also some cursive writing. We can't make out all of it, but it says what appears to be "Ben Wattam" or something similar. Underneath that is "123 E" then what might be "First St." Under that is "M.A." and there is a word after this, but it is hard to make out. It might be "Yard," but we're not sure. Anyway, on a completely different end of that side of the drawer is a large number which may have nothing to do with the rest of it. It's something like 282. 2 something 2. Maybe 282. I may be able to tell better if I see it in person again. I got online and looked for a Ben Wattam. I found one born Jan. 28, 1989 in Indiana. We're in KY, and I'm not sure where my grandpa bought the chifferbone, but that's not too far away and the man would have been around 30 or 31 when my grandfather bought it. It could be him. I can't seem to find many Wattam's on the genealogical sites. I don't know what the M.A. is. I mean it could be the state, but M.A. would not be the right way to show it. Perhaps it was someone's initials and the part I can't make out is another last name. I don't know. I cannot currently check the email address displayed here, so please post comments to the board instead of emailing me. If you have something private you wish to discuss, tell me and I will let you know how to contact me in private. Thanks. Notify Administrator about this message?
