The AUOW relied
heavily upon Freemasonry for its rituals and symbols. The name of the
organization was changed to the Pioneer Mutual Life Insurance Company in
1948 and their website is: www.pmlife.com. The shield on the marker
symbolizes protection, and the anchor symbolizes hope. The woman's side of this organization was called the Degree of Honor. The A. U. O. W. was active in
the 1890s and early 1900s.
