family motto translation

On our family crest there is a motto (on a ribbon scroll)
It says "Devant si Je puis" A word for word translation in french would be (I think) "In front of if I then" which of course makes no sense at all. I realize translations are seldon this simple because of different grammer, tense, etc. Can anyone make sense of this? The translation I came up with would be french, but perhaps it is latin?..
