Dear Kate,

I have forgotten where I read it, but I found a site which said that the oak leaf could also stand for authority, such as the head of a family. This is true of my Great-Great Grandfather (1830-1904), who has an oak leaf inscription on his gravestone. He was the only one of four brothers to survive the Civil War and carry on the family name.
