Thanks for the ideas! It sure beats what I was thinking he meant! Considering most of the other entries regarding the young ladies visits, I think he may have considered himself quite a "ladies man". What a shame he never finished the diary--it ends in May of 1886 with only one more entry in October reading "failed preliminary examinations".
