I am looking in to family history including the INNOCENT family of Nottinghamshire. A copy of an extract from the family Bible (I think it is: unfortunately I donít know where the original is) reads as follows.

Age 1 Year 3 Months and 3 Weeks
Dear Martha Died Sept 15 1863

July 25th 1872 John Innocent Senr died Aged 90
Sept 21st 1887 Mary Innocent died Aged 82

Jany 2nd 1873 Elizth Innocent and William Lamb married
Feb 11th 1874 Elizth Ann Lamb born
June 15th 1876 Edith Mary Lamb born
April 9th 1879 William John Lamb born

The 1871 census gives the birthplace of John Innocent (b. 1782): Cropwell Butler, Notts; and that of his wife Mary (b. 1871) as Orston, Notts. In 1871 they were living at 24 Wood Street, Mansfield. John was described as a retired farmer. (The census misquotes his age as 55 as against Maryís 65, which was correct. As she was married at the age of 16 and started bearing children a year later the year given in the census return would have meant that John was only 6 years old when he was married.)

John junr. (b. 1829) was a mechanical engineer. his wife Mary E. (b. ~ 1835) was born in Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire and they had three children, Martha (~1866), Annie (~1868) and George (~1872),

Elizabeth Innocent was my great-grandmother. Her elder daughter Elizabeth kept a daily diary for 4 years from 1892 to 1895 which I am in the process of transcribing (and trying to chase up the numerous family references in them). Elizabeth did not marry. The second daughter Edith did, and was my grandmother. She also kept a diary from 1898 to 1904, by which time she was married.

Martha (1841-1863) was in service and died of scarlet fever which she caught from the children in her charge.

Henry (b. 1846) was a blacksmith. His wife Julia came from Rudham, Norfolk and they had at least five children, Albert, Eliza, Harry, Edith and Julia born approximately in 1875, 1877, 1880, 1881 and 1886.

I should be most grateful to learn more about this family.

John Mansfield
