This is not a family that I am researching but I thought I’d see what I could find for you. Are you sure that Margaret was born in Halifax? Or could she perhaps have been working there as a domestic when she met Christopher Atkinson. Innis, of course, is a Scottish name and there where families of that name in many areas, notably, Pictou County. And one thing that I must warn you about—almost every Scottish family with at least a couple of daughters had a “Margaret”. I did find an obituary from 1930 for a John Roderick Innis age 74. That means he would have been born in 1856,so a contemporary of your Margaret.

John Roderick Innis Has Passed Away
September 11, 1930
Halifax Herald
A wide circle of Friends will receive with sincere regret news of the passing, yesterday morning, at his home, 288 North St., of John Roderick Innis, cabinet maker in the employ of the Piercey Supply Co.. By whom he was deservedly valued, both for his skill and his fidelity. Mr. Innis was as his name suggests of Scotch race, and was born in Scotsburn, Pictou, having come to Halifax about 35 years ago as a vigorous man of 39 years. He has lived here continuously since then, winning general esteem. There survive him to mourn a grevious loss in which they have the sympathy of all who knew them, three daughters and two sons- Mrs. I. Brenton and Miss Margaret Innis at home; Ethel in Boston; John at home and Ellwood in Boston. Two brothers and a sister residents in Providence, R. I., also survive. A faithful and valued member of the congregation of St. John's (United) Church, the minister of that church, Rev. A. J. Pue-Gilchrist, will officiate at his funeral which will take place at half two o'clock on Friday afternoon, interment to be in St. John's Cemetery.

(Notice he has a Margaret too!!)
I checked out the Pictou Co Census of 1871 and found the following
154 INNIS Kenneth M 38 - N.S. C. of Scotland Scotch Joiner
154 INNIS Roderick M 27 - N.S. C. of Scotland Scotch Joiner
154 INNIS Margaret F 22 - N.S. C. of Scotland Scotch -
1871 Census of Pictou County – Middle River, Division 2

These would have been brothers and sister living in the same household. Don’t get stuck on the discrepancy in ages. That is very common.
Anyway you need to check out the following website
http://www.rootsweb.com/~canns/
It is a goldmine of information and you can access the genealogical site for each county through it
Happy Hunting
