One of my wife's great-great grandfathers (maternal side) was Thomas Walton Ingram of Mathews County. Mathews County is very near Lancaster County as many of you Virginia Ingram experts will know. Thomas was born in 1837 and died in the Piankatank District of Mathews County, Virginia in 1894. He served in the war with The Mathews Light Artillery and was wounded during his service, an injury he never really fully recovered from that limited his work (on his farm) and likely led to a premature death. His wife received a pension from Virginia for his service. No one in my wife's family knows who Thomas's parents are. I think I might have figured it out through process of elimination, but I wanted to see if anyone out there could tell me if I am on the right track. Here's what we do know: ** Thomas Walton Ingram was born in 1837 according to information recorded by an older member of the family back in the late 1960s or 1970s. He died in 1894 which is corroborated by his pension papers. He is buried in Trinity Church Cemetery. ** In 1860 he first appears in Mathews County as a farm laborer living with George E. & Mary H. Tabb. According to this census Thomas was born in Middlesex County. A William W. Ingram, age 28, married with one child, was also living in Mathews County in 1860. According to this census William was born in Lancaster County. I believe he was very likely Thomas's older brother. More on William below. **Thomas married Priscilla Basset, daughter of Richard & Charlotte Bassett, on November 8, 1866 in Mathews County, Virginia. Source for this is the same as the birth and Thomas's full name. **I can not find any of these Ingrams in 1870 in the census. Thomas must have must have been skipped; William may have died or moved to another state. **Thomas and Priscilla had three children: (1) Charlotte Gilbert Ingram, born 1867, died 1961; (2) Sidney Walton Ingram, born 1869, died 1962; (3) Thomas H. Ingram, born 1877, died 1906. Source for this is the same as the birth and Thomas's full name. **Only one Ingram male in the general area (Northumberland, Lancaster, Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex) in 1850 and 1840 seems likely to be the father of Thomas from census review; and I can find no other information that detracts from this conclusion. The others either do not have a male in the family of nearly the right age, or a male named Thomas, or a male named Thomas who is not accounted for elsewhere. The Ingram male that I believe is Thomas's father is William S. Ingram who appears in Northumberland in 1850. There he appears as William Ingram, no middle initial, wife apparently deceased, but I think this must be the same William S. Ingram that is in Lancaster County in 1840. The ages of his children in the 1840 census record fit perfectly with the William Ingram in Northumberland in 1850, and there is no William Ingram in Lancaster in 1850. It's true that some of the transcribed records show this William as William J. Ingram in 1840, but I have looked closely at the actual record and the way that census taker constructed his letters leads me to feel quite certain the middle initial he wrote was not a J. I'm pretty sure it was an S, but it was not a J. **The William W. Ingram who you will find in Mathews County in 1860 was 28 years old. The William Ingram, son of William Ingram, in Northumberland in 1850 was 18. The William Ingram 1840 census record has a male 5–10 years of age. There was no other William Ingram in the general area that causes me to doubt that these three records point to the same person. There was a William Ingram, wife Margaret, in Lancaster in 1860 who was 25 at the time, but I remember finding information somewhere that led me to conclude he was of different family...can't put my finger on that information at the moment. I think the fact that William W. Ingram was in Mathews County at the same time Thomas was (1860) is very significant and not just a coincidence. I'm tentatively concluding that their father died during the 1850s, that their mother was already dead, and so they moved on. Both for some reason moved to nearby Mathews County. Why, I don't know. Anything anyone can provide on this family would be greatly appreciated. Right now my working hypothesis is that Thomas's parents are William S. and Elizabeth Lattimore Ingram.
