Monroe (possibly James Monroe) Ingram was my great grandfather and has been a "brick wall" for me. I found him on the 1870 Smith Co. MS census living in the home of Tristan B. Rogers. He was 21 yrs. old and listed Alabama as his place of birth. I found who I believe to be him on the 1880 Smith Co., MS census listed as J.M. Ingram, age 30 born in Alabama. In the household with him was a Sarah Ingram age 61 listed as “wife” which I believe to be in error. There is also a Catherine Lee age 80 listed as “mother”. I think Sarah could possibly be Monroe’s Mother and Catherine Lee Sarah’s Mother and am hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this.
About 1885, Monroe married Martha Jane “Mattie” Smith, daughter of Oscar Smith and Mary Ann Crosby, in Smith Co., MS. They were listed on the 1900 Rankin Co., MS census with their children Allie B.; James W.; Elbert R.; Charles A.; and Lillie Mae. Next door is Mattie’s mother Mary who has a grandson, William Smith, living with her.
The 1900 Census is the last time I have been able to locate Monroe but I know Mattie and her children lived in Lincoln Co., MS for a time in the early 1900s. Their oldest daughter, Allie Belle married Edward Lee Williams in 1906 in Lincoln Co., MS and Mattie, herself, remarried Sidney Bullock on 31 Dec 1908 in Lincoln Co., MS.
I really hope someone can help me with this and I would be more than happy to share what little I have on this family. Thanks and happy hunting, Patti
