I am seeking any surviving descendants of Friedrich Carl Schenck (1741-1814). Born in Siegen, Germany on 29 March 1741, Friedrich Carl became Captain of Cavalry in the Dutch Army and an equerry to Prince Wilhelm V of Orange and Nassau in The Hague (Haag), Holland. Friedrich Carl Schenck and several members of his Family accompanied the Prince when he fled from Holland during the French invasion and remained with him during his seven-year sojourn at The Palace of Hampton Court, London between 1795 and 1802 when they returned to The Hague.
Subsequently, several of Friedrich Carl’s descendants followed distinguished military careers serving in Batavia (now Indonesia) in particular in Java and Sumatra. Apart from those with military occupations, some members of the family held high Government Ministries in those areas, while others served in the tobacco industry. Successive generations married in the same areas and, at least up to the late 1880s and probably beyond, their children were born there. Several members of the Family appear to have returned to The Hague on retirement and later died there.
I am fortunate in having a genealogical table, printed in Germany in 1905, of Friedrich Carl’s ancestors, family and their descendants. This table traces the family back to c.1560, but has since been extended by subsequent research back to c.1440. I would be delighted to pass on a scanned copy of this important document to any surviving descendants of this Family, along with copies of other relevant documents of historical interest.
Perhaps some kind person in Indonesia would refer to the Indonesian Telephone Directory to see whether any persons named 'SCHENCK' are still listed therein, and advise me accordingly at the e-mail address below. Thank you!
David H J Schenck
