Bombay Marine 1816

The earliest reference I have to Hugh Atkinson is in 1816 when he appears on the muster books of the Bombay Marine. He appears to have joined as an able-seaman aged 21. Over the years his aged reduced in the musters so that by 1832 he was giving his age as 32. When he left the sea, taking a land job as assistant to the Master-Attendant of the Bombay dockyard.

In 1816, of course, Java was returned to the Dutch by the British who had held it since 1811.

Atkinson's country of origin is listed in the early registers as N.Bat although this changes to England as he went up the ranks.

It seems to me that N.Bat suggests some connection with Batavia or New Batavia or the Batavian Republic. Was Atkinson serving on a Dutch ship at the time of the treaty?

All suggestions as to where I might look for the origins of my gt gt grandfather gratefully received.

Thanks!
