It is recorded that the eleven year old daughter of riding master Langdale was murdered 'by a sword cut which cleft her scull' on the opening day of the outbreak of the Indian mutiny on 10th May 1857. Her father was a junior European officer of the 3rd Bengal cavalry regiment which started it off after 85 members of their regiment were taken away in shackles for refusing to 'bite the bullet' (due to the rumours about the use of animal fat).
The riding master survived and retired as Captain. He was the son of William Langdale of the 11th Light Dragoons and he also had a son William who was probably the William who is recorded as marrying Caroline S Hawkins in India in 1867. If anybody anywhere has any information on this line please let me know!
