Jewish community of Bombay (C19)

My family were among the Baghdadian (Babylonian) Jews who emigrated to India in the C19. Like many others, they didn't stay long in India before moving off East to Shanghai or Singapore.

I would like to find some trace of them in India however, but have no idea as to where to start. Did the British keep records of non-Brits in India? If so, are the records extant in India, or are they in London?

Any ideas would be gratefully received.
