Both Artime and Artimez appear in some documents pertaining to my family. The name Julia appears in my family--one of my grandfather's sisters. She would have been Julia Martinez Artime. There were several other brothers and sisters, but none were named Clotilde or Louisa. There was a tendency in my family, as in many others, to name children after ancestors or other relatives.
One of my family members did go to Cuba, but he was my grandmother's brother. He later moved to Argentina. The motivation for moving from Asturias in my family was primarily economic, but also to avoid forced military service in some cases (or so family legend suggests).
It was not uncommon for one or two people to move to the US, and later provide temporary housing for friends and relatives from Asturias. Several of my family members visited the US at least once, but went back to Spain. My grandparent's record at Ellis Island shows that they has listed a relative as their intended destination.
I will repeat the information I have on my grandfather's family, since my earlier posting contains an error. He was Victor Martínez Artime, born at 3:00 a.m., January 25, 1894, in Salinas, Asturias. His sibs were Odulia, Julia, Virginia and Manuel. Victor came to the US in 1913.
Victor's father was José Martínez Alonso, a native of Muros de Nalon, 46 years old and living in Salinas when my grandfather was born (He would have been born about 1848..)
Victor's paternal grandfather was Gregorio Martínez, a native of Muros who was a day laborer living in Salinas when my grandfather was born.
Victor's paternal grandmother was Aurelia Alonso, also a native of Muros, who was also living in Salinas when Victor was born
Victor's mother was Maria Artime Ovies, a native of Gozón (a district like Castrillón, not a town--its is located across the river just to the east of Salinas). She was 32 years old and living in Salinas when Victor was born. (She would have been born about 1862.)
Victor's maternal grandfather was Miguel Artime, who was deceased by 1894, and who was a native of Gozón.
Victor's maternal grandmother was Florentina Ovies, also deceased by 1894, and was also a native of Gozón.
