Barbara:I found a few more pieces of the puzzle:
Mary Jane's parents are Mary Jane Shaver married to Josiah Hiatt, Hamilton County Indian Jan 25 1837.They probably divorced since Mary Jane, 34, and her children Sarah M, Martha, Chas D, and Mary J Hiatt are in Warren County in 1850 and there is a Gedcom with a 2nd marriage for Josiah.
Oldest daughter Sarah Malvina Hiatt was b. March 27 1838 in Lafayette, Indiana. Her parents are listed on her N. C. 1915 death certificate as Josiah Hyatt of N. Carolina and Mary Jane Schaffer of Kentucky. Her married name was McKee.She seems to be the only one of the sisters without multiple marriages/divorces.
Daughter Martha is found in 1880 census next door to her daughter Ella (from her 1st marriage to Reuben Tolliver) in Parke County, Indiana with her 3rd husband Benjamin Lamb. (Marthie E. Shepard 15 May 1879 to Benjamin Lamb in Fountain, Ind.)
Son Charles D. never married
As for Mary Jane she married someone named "Camp"
In 1900 Sarah M "McKev" and her sisters Martha E Lamb and Mary J Camp are all living together in Franklin, Grant, Indiana. This household includes Harry Shepard-Martha's son from her 2nd marriage.
