Murder of Teacher about 1900-1901
Searching for information concerning the murder of a Terre Haute teacher in the early 1900's.The Chicago Tribune in 1904 mentions this murder saying that the suspect who was arrested for the crime was broken out of jail by a mob and burned alive. The article does not mention the name of the teacher nor the name of the suspect. When another teacher, Sarah Schafer, was murdered Jan. 21, 1904 in Bedford, IN,the officials were worried that such a mob might pounce upon Lawrence County if there was an arrest.Sarah Schafer was from Elkhart, IN and had been in Bedford about 6 months serving as a Latin teacher at Bedford high school. She had also attended the university at Terre Haute before coming to Bedford. Could there be some connection between the murders? The Sarah Schafer murder was never solved. Would like to know the name of the teacher and suspect or any other information available.
