Another question Arlene. Does this description by Martha Pattison Sternberger square with what you've been able to learn from other sources? Also, from a genealogical perspective, how do you manage that? Do you just use Pattison throughout, or do you make an effort to ascertain on a case by case basis which individuals adopted the original Scottish spelling and which ones didn't?

Obviously the latter would be more work, but I think we always strive to be as accurate as possible (I know I do). One thing I always look for with my ancestors that immigrated is what the original spelling of their surnames were and when they became "Americanized". Or alternately, when a surname transformed from "Old English" to more modern English.
