Bill, Martha Pattison Sternberger in her biography of her husband said that the Pattison spelling was adopted (from the original Scottish) when the Pattersons moved across the Ohio into Ohio and Indiana from Kentucky to distinguish themselves from the Pattersons who were either indifferent to or practiced slavery.
